ESL Building Meaningful Relationships with Students

Greetings, Thank you for your support of the English as a Second Language program. We have had a wonderful and busy spring semester. Our teachers have been working very hard to make the classes exciting, energetic, meaningful and enjoyable. It is important to them that they challenge the students but most of all that the students feel welcomed and respected. Our goal is to provide quality ESL classes within a fun and confidence-building environment. This is can be no small feat when one considers the abilities and diversity in each level, but so far, we are enjoying it!

We have had several new students join our classes since January. Although some students are not able to attend every week, there seems to be a core group who faithfully participate. Several students this semester are very dedicated to their studies. Some are asking for extra time outside of the class to practice. One student started in Level 2 this fall, and has progressed so quickly that she has now moved to Level 3, catching up to the other students in a matter of weeks!

In the last report, I mentioned that we were hoping to implement some out of class activities to encourage morale and further practice of skills. By April 13th, we will have had our second coffee time event at Bean Tree Café! Coffee time has been a really enjoyable experience. Teachers and students can enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and share an informal time of conversation. It offers opportunity to get to know the students on a more personal level and provides opportunity to discuss topics such as work, school, family and faith. The students seem very grateful for the opportunity, and one student even wrote an email after the event expressing her appreciation.

As we near the end of this school year, please pray that we may continue to build meaningful relationships with the students. We feel very privileged and excited about the success of the ESL program. So from everyone at ESL, thank you again for your support!
