Klothes 4 Kids, a back-to-school clothing program for low income children in the elementary schools of Lynchburg, and the counties of Amherst, Bedford and Campbell, was begun in 1993. This year we celebrated our 25th year. This is probably one of the longest running ministries of the Lynchburg Baptist Association. Klothes 4 Kids continues to have strong response and help for this project from our associational churches. More than 90 volunteers helped set up appointment times, made reminder calls to those participating, sorted and organized the clothing, worked the sale days, and helped with the clean-up. Then we must not forget about the clothing, school supplies and back-packs donated by our associational churches. Look at what the Lord has helped us accomplish by working together!
This year’s sale was held August 3-5 at West Lynchburg Baptist Church. We appreciate West Lynchburg for allowing us to use their fellowship hall for an entire week each year for this project and for providing two rooms to store our clothing and supplies in.
This year we received back-packs and school supplies from the associates at the J. C. Penny store. This was a big surprise and most welcomed. The workers collected the supplies and brought them to us on our set-up day. Many thanks to them for their generosity.
We could not forget about our two Virginia Extension Agents, Linda Stephens and Dottie Rucker, who make healthy snack bags to pass out to each child, which the children look forward to each year! The Extension Agents also pass on recipes and other healthy eating materials to the mothers attending our sale.
This year’s Klothes 4 Kids project helped 262 children from 115 families. Over the past 25 years, 8,919 children from 4,022 families have received new clothing and school supplies from this wonderful program.
I am so blessed to have been a part of this project from very beginning. Who would have imagined that Klothes 4 Kids would still be going strong after 25 years. Everyone who works this program enjoys the experience and receives a blessing. The Lord has blessed this program from the very beginning because we are doing His will to help those in need. May we always continue in His will.
