Klothes 4 Kids

Klothes 4 Kids is a ministry of the churches of the Lynchburg Baptist Association which helps low-income families purchase affordable back-to-school clothing for their children. Families in need are referred by elementary school principals\counselors in Lynchburg City and some Campbell, Amherst, and Bedford County schools. Referrals also come from the Interfaith Outreach Association. Over the past twenty-five years, new clothing has been provided to over 8,919 children through this program.

Clothing is arranged like a store for parents to shop for their children.

At the end of July invitations are sent to the families whose names have been provided through school principals and guidance counselors and other area agencies. Parents must call back and set up an appointment time to “shop” for their children’s clothing. This “sale” charges families $5.00 per child which entitles them to purchase two sets of new clothing (2 shirts and 2 pairs of jeans), socks, underwear, a backpack, and school supplies. Uniforms are also available. A small fee is charged for two reasons: 1) to help preserve the dignity of families by not perpetuating the prevalent “something for nothing” attitude, (however, no family is turned away because they cannot afford the fee) and 2) to assist with the purchase of additional clothing.

All of the clothes sold each year are provided by the Lynchburg Baptist Association and its twenty-one member churches. Each church is responsible for providing new clothing of a particular sex and size. On the Monday before the sale, participating area churches drop off the clothing collected in their church at the sale site. During this week, clothing is sorted and prepared for the sale. Volunteers from area churches, both youth and adults, assist with the sale. Clothing is arranged on racks, sorted by gender and size, much as a regular department store.

klothes4kids-kidsThe 2018 Klothes 4 Kids sale will be held August 2-4, Thursday through Saturday during the first week of August, at West Lynchburg Baptist Church, located at 3031 Memorial Avenue in Lynchburg. Many families rely on this sale as an affordable way to clothe their children for the upcoming school year.   Last year, we helped 262 children and 115 families.
